Kalimantan 10/05/08
I’m being shown around Kalimantan by an Indonesian chap called Ardy, whose job is to catalogue and record Dayak dialects which are on the verge of extinction. We’re currently staying with Ardy’s sister in a village called Nanga Taman.
I had the chance to see a catholic wedding where 12 couples were married in one go, due to financial limitations! It was bizarre to hear a catholic ceremony done in Indonesian, so much more interesting than when done in Latin! Lots of drinking of Tuak, much good-natured pressure to drink as much as possible.
Amazing how so many different religions co-exist in peaceful close proximity- neighbouring villages are often very different religions and races from each other.
